Founding of the Society

According to the Royal Meteorological Society website (), the Meteorological Society of London was founded on 1823, October 15. Several other meetings were held over the next few months, up until 1824, May 12. The Society then lay dormant until several meetings in the summer and autumn of 1832, when only financial matters were discussed.

The Society was revived at a meeting on 1836, November 15. The Society met regularly from 1836 to 1843. Many of the papers read before the Society were published in the Transactions of the Meteorological Society (1839). The Society also published a Proceedings (for the Sessions 1838-40, 1840-41 and 1841-42), which included reports of the meetings. The last meeting of the Society was 1843, May 9.

This Society was succeeded on 1848, June 3 by another Meteorological Society of London, which published no journal, and which was dissolved in 1850, September in favour of a Society formed earlier that year, the British Meteorological Society, now called the Royal Meteorological Society ().

According to the historical area of the Royal Meteorological Society website (), all eight issues of this journal were "published under the immediate sanction and direction of the Meteorological Society of Great Britain." The latter also makes it clear that this was the name of the Society from 1842 -1843, but that it may have been used as early as the latter part of 1841.
